A shop slab or metal-building pad has one job: stay flat and carry weight for decades. On Southeast Texas ground, that comes down to what happens before the concrete truck shows up. The Beaumont clay under this whole region is an expansive soil — the USDA classifies it as poorly drained and very slowly permeable — so an unprepared pad will wick up moisture, move with the wet-dry cycle, and crack under point loads like trailer jacks and vehicle lifts.
We form slabs the way this ground demands: dirt work and grading first so water runs away from the pad, compacted select fill, moisture barrier where the use calls for it, and steel throughout the pour. Thickened edges and load-rated sections go where your building columns and equipment will actually sit — that’s a conversation we have with you (or your building supplier) before we ever set forms.
Rural properties out toward Fannett, Hamshire, and Sour Lake are a big part of our slab work — barn pads, equipment slabs, and pads for metal shops on acreage. Long gravel drives and open prairie lots are exactly where a properly built pad pays for itself, because there’s no getting a crew back cheap once a building is standing on a bad one.
Size and thickness set the baseline — a 20x20 shop pad and a 40x60 metal-building slab are different animals. Load requirements move the number too: turndown footings, thickened edges, and extra steel for equipment areas all add material but are much cheaper than fixing a slab that wasn’t built for the building on top of it.

Yes — that’s core work for us. We coordinate the slab spec with your building’s anchor-bolt plan and column loads, form turndown edges where required, and pour flat so your erector isn’t fighting the foundation. Bring us the building quote and we’ll spec the slab to match.
Compacted select fill over graded ground, steel reinforcement, and drainage that moves water away from the pad. The Beaumont clay holds water and moves as it wets and dries, so the prep under the slab matters more than the concrete itself.
It depends on what rolls onto it. Four inches handles light shop use; vehicle lifts, tractors, and loaded trailers call for thicker sections or footings under the load points. We spec it at the estimate instead of guessing.
