A backyard patio here has to live with the same two facts as every other slab in Southeast Texas: expansive clay below and serious rain above. The Beaumont clay swells and shrinks with every wet-dry cycle, and a patio poured without a compacted base and steel will crack and tilt — usually right where it meets the house, which is the crack everyone notices from the kitchen window.
The detail that separates a good patio from a callback is water. Around 60 inches of rain falls on this region in a normal year, and a patio has to shed it away from your foundation, not trap it against the slab your house sits on. We set our grades so the patio drains away from the home, tie the pour’s joints into a layout that controls where hairline movement happens, and finish the surface for bare feet in August — broom textures that don’t get slick when a Gulf shower blows through.
Most of the homes we pour patios behind are 1960s–80s builds — solid houses whose original back porch was a tiny pad that doesn’t fit how families actually use a backyard now. Extending or replacing that pad with a real patio is one of the highest-value pours a homeowner can make, and it’s a one-to-two-day disruption, not a construction season.
Size and shape come first — squares and rectangles form fast, while curves, multiple levels, and wrap-arounds take more form work. Tear-out of an existing pad, if there is one, adds demo time. Finish is the other lever: standard broom finish is the workhorse, and decorative finishes or added thickness for a future hot tub or outdoor kitchen change the number.

That joint is where bad patios fail, because the house sits on deep, stable ground and a poorly-based patio doesn’t. We compact the base, reinforce the pour, and place an isolation joint at the foundation so the patio can live with normal soil movement without pulling at your house or cracking through.
Yes — that’s built into the grade before we pour. On our flat, slow-draining clay, a patio that slopes even slightly the wrong way sends every storm against your slab. We set fall away from the house and check it with the forms, not by eye.

Most are formed, poured, and finished inside 1–2 working days, weather permitting, then 7 days of cure before furniture goes on. We schedule a firm start date and keep it.
